Miss Tech 2018

Miss-Tech is a team of women for women from Robotics Association of Nepal. It has been initiated with a vision of encouraging women in technical field and develop the leadership in them. It has been developing a platform for enthusiastic women in technology to share their technical knowledge so that they can make a positive difference in their communities. Miss-Tech aims to provide different software, hardware and leadership related workshops for the students of different levels to teach courses about coding, creating and computing. The team believes that the fastest way to change the society is to mobilize the women of the society.

Go Girls and Women Technopreneur are the workshop series provided by Miss-Tech for girls which gave them the opportunity to explore the world of technology and fully express themselves with confidence. It covered different topics related to technical field targeting school level of girls to the bachelor’s level.

The workshop series focuses not only on technical knowledge but also on developing leadership quality, mass communication and public speaking, which at last leads to the overall personality development of the participants. The first Go Girls series was completed with nine workshops which was organized on monthly basis, targeting school level students to undergraduate level students. After the go girls workshop, Women Technopreneur workshop series got implemented with the support of U.S Embassy for Girls in Tech Program. The series focused on not only the students from Kathmandu valley, but more than 420 women from different parts of the country.

Miss Tech team now transferred the focus on Women ChangeMaker for the program, Girls in Tech with the aim “Women Empowerment through Technology “.

Women-ChangeMaker will bring the leadership and confident in each participant and will use the hardware, software, programming and social networking to keep them strong and will compete with the society norms and values which has been challenging  them to be backward or has determined them as a mistake of the society.

This will create a new value and new hope to bring change and bring women out from the kitchen and develop the capacity to keep themselves updated in technology and keep their words in front of the world through social media.

Vision Statement of Miss-Tech:

When women work together hand in hand, they can change the world. Our mission is to empower, connect and support women in Nepal to advance their career in technology and engineering. For this, we feature Go Girls & Women Technopreneur series workshop. Miss-Tech wants to change the cultural norms that is binding girls

What is Miss-Tech 2018?
Miss-Tech is a national mass collaboration focused on women empowerment that takes place for one day to solve the issue in the society faced by Women with the theme Women ChangeMakerTransformational Changes Through Technology”. The event embraces collaborative problem solving with a goal of producing relevant solutions to address women needs applicable to women living in various areas. This is the third time it is being organized in Nepal. This year there will around 5-10 challenges on the theme Women ChangeMaker “ Transformational Changes Through Technology “ in eight challenge categories: Leadership and political participation, Economic empowerment, Ending violence against women, Peace and security, Humanitarian action, youth, governance and national planning and Sustainable development agenda. Robotics Association of Nepal is leading this national collaboration along with a number of government and non-government collaborators and around 10 local Organization working for Women Empowerment.

Objectives of organizing Miss Tech 2018:
Miss-Tech team from RAN aims to organize 2018 edition of Miss Tech 2018 based on the support we have received from our participants and the motivation from different organizations  to conduct Women ChangeMaker, a technical workshop. RAN has developed huge technical community so far in this past 8 year. The way participants had worked together in different teams to compete for solving problems related to water and giving us different prototypes in 2016, organizer can share proudly. Similarly, the theme of Mountain women, was a great platform last year which allowed participants to work on various local mountain issues that was further mentored and incubated by relevant agencies even after the event. Thus, these events provide us enough room for organizing such events regularly and at a larger scale so that we can inspire a bigger female crowd to participate.

At the same time, we have observed that these events are extremely important in bringing stakeholders from different sectors to work on issues that matter to people in our context.

Following the theme of Women ChangeMaker, we see a great prospect in this year challenge of allowing participants to work on various local issues that can perhaps be continued by relevant agencies even after the event. We believe that this would open opportunities for participants to create local apps and hardware with which they can benefit from along with the agencies and public. We also want to take this event as an opportunity to link young students and professionals with electronics and computing background to establish linkages with technologists, environmentalists, use data that can be made available and come up with prototypes of applications that can be scaled up, thus matching following objectives:

  • To promote entrepreneurship skills in young engineering/IT women.
  • To address challenges faced by women with high and low tech skills in different regions
  • To provide them feasible technological solution.

What are the challenges that this year’s event will focus on?

There will be different challenges put forward like previous year and announce them for eight challenges : Leadership and political participation, Economic empowerment, Ending violence against women, Peace and security, Humanitarian action, youth, governance and national planning and Sustainable development agenda. There will be more challenges developed for the participants in collaboration with other Stakeholders. Those challenges will be accompanied by necessary data and will be defined in collaboration with our partner organizations and network. However, they will get an opportunity to refine their applications and prototype even after the event with the supporters.

Who can participate?

Anyone Female can participate in the Miss Tech 2018. It requires individuals with a broad range of skills. We are looking for engineers, technologists, scientists, designers, artists, educators, students, entrepreneurs – anyone who has a passion for changing the world and is willing to contribute.

What’s so innovative about Miss Tech 2018 this year?

Miss Tech 2018  for the first time seen interesting solutions coming out of the participants box. Engineers/IT enthusiast skills and knowledge had amazed organizers through their new way of thinking by addressing competition theme through their prototypes. This made us think of taking forward this amazing solutions to next level for which we are starting on product incubation program. The idea of product incubation program is to convert early feasible prototype to final prototype and then final prototype to product thus helping the participants/winner to get into entrepreneurship journey.

Product Incubation program will boost the innovative idea of students/professionals start themself off, help them take forward their idea/projects forward because of lack of standard practice for building products. So, product incubation program with human centric design thinking will have following activities will

be conducted as part of the program for the 3 months.

  1. Product Design thinking : [ 2 weeks ]
  2. Resource Optimization :Hardware & Software [ 4 weeks ]
  3. Calculation of Warranties & Guarantees [ 1 weeks ]
  4. Intellectual Product Management: [1 weeks]
  5. Product Mass Manufacturing : [ 4 weeks ]
