Miss Tech 2017 jointly organized by  US Embassy under girls in tech program, ICIMOD under the framework of SERVIR Hindu-Kush in partnership with Robotics Association of Nepal[RAN] is a national mass collaboration focused on women technopreneurship that takes place to solve the issue in the society faced by Women with the theme Mountain Women “Transformational Changes Through Technology”. The event embraces collaborative problem solving with a goal of producing relevant solutions to address women needs applicable to women living in Mountain areas.. This is the second time it is being organized in Nepal. This year there will around 5-10 challenges on theme  Mountain Women “ Transformational Changes Through Technology “ in five challenge categories: Occupation, Migration, Violence, Social status and Information. Robotics Association Of Nepal is leading this national collaboration along with a number of government and non government collaborators and around 10 local Organization working for Women Empowerment.

  1. Objectives of organizing Miss Tech 2017:

Miss Tech team from RAN have decided to organize 2017 edition of Miss Tech 2017 based on the support we have received from US Embassy for Girls in Tech program  to conduct women technopreneur 5 days technical workshop at AC Kathmandu, Biratnagar, Illam, Pokhara, Dhangadi, Bhairahawa and Surkhet.   RAN has developed huge technical community so far in this past 7 year. The way participants had worked together in different teams to compete for solving problems related to water and giving us different prototypes last year , organizer can share proudly. This also gives enough room for organizing such events regularly and at a larger scale so that we can inspire a bigger female crowd to participate.

At the same time, we have observed that these events are extremely important in bringing stakeholders from different sectors to work on issues that matter to people in our context.

Following the theme of Mountain women, we see a great prospect in this year challenge of allowing participants to work on various local mountain issues that can perhaps be continued by relevant agencies even after the event. We believe that this would open opportunities for participants to create local apps and hardware with which they can benefit from along with the agencies and public. We also want to take this event as an opportunity to link young students and professionals with electronics and computing background to establish linkages with technologists, environmentalists, use data that can be made available and come up with prototypes of applications that can be scaled up, thus matching following objectives:

  • To promote entrepreneurship skills in young engineering/IT women.
  • To address challenges faced by women in high hilly regions.
  • To provide them feasible technological solution.

  1. What are the challenges that this year’s event will focus on ?

There will be different challenges put forward life previous year and announce them  for mountain development in five categories : Occupation, Migration, Violence, Social status and Information. There will be more challenges developed for the participants in collaboration with ICIMOD and other Stakeholders. Those challenges will be accompanied by necessary data and will be defined in collaboration with our partner organizations and network. However, they will get an opportunity to refine their applications and prototype  even after the event with the supporters.
